Lockwood Locking Systems History
Lockwood is an Australian manufacturer of locks. It was founded by John Stanley Ogden. He was an American and he was born in Brooklyn, New York. He married a women from Australia name Olga Nellie Hershell. He founded the Ogden Industries in 1934 and with it introduced the new manufacturer of padlocks and many other quality locks which is today known as Lockwood brand. The building was destroyed by fire in 1943, the same year that Ogden died. He had a wife, son and two daughters. Soon after that the company was purchased by Noyes. After that the entire production was moved to the facility at Oakleigh where it is still today.
Later the company was bought by Adelaide Steamship Company but it was again in the hands of the Ogden Industries when they bought it back in 1989. In 1993 Ogden Industries became part of the Email Limited. This way Efco and Lockwood brand where incorporated. Later Efco ,Whitco, and Lockwood were incorporated into single company, Lockwood Australia Limited.
In 1999 Swedish lock manufacturer and the world leading lock group ASSA ABLOY bought 50 % share of the company and immediately created a new entity which was named Lockwood Security Pty Limited. This change brought numerous improvements in production. Quality was improved and from there the focus on R&D was more intense and new technology changed what Lockwood used to be. Every segment of production was modernized and nothing was the same as before. ASS ALBOY assumed full ownership of the Lockwood in 2001.
In January 2005 Lockwood Security Products became what is now known as ASSA ALBOY Australia Pty. Limited. Lockwood is not just the part of ASSA ALBOY, but its main manufacturer which benefits from ASSA ALBOY company resources and its new R&D technology.
ASSA ALBOY invested 16$ in original building and site. The investment is according to Tom Devine, General Manager of ASSA ALBOY Commercial Division (Australia), intended to show Lockwood’s commitment to security and awareness and providing innovative solutions to all security hardware needs.
The company had a long past and not an easy one. From the beginning there were problems and changing of owners. The company had an early setback in 1943 when the building was destroyed in fire and later with the death of its owner and founder John Stanley Ogden. He was only 45 years old. But company progressed and moved forward. The company changed many owners and in some period return to the original owners but again it changed hands. It started from simple padlock in 1934 and now it is leading manufacturer of security locks. Technology prevailed and Lockwood made the best of it. The example is new and recent Nexion Keyless Electronic Front Door Suite which is state of the art.
Lockwood still has its own logo which is now produced by ASSA ALBOY. The company is growing and investing more and more in R&D and the goal of the company is to become one of the best export companies in Australia. From modest beginning to a leading company in lock security, it should be an example how to work and where to invest. Have you always preffered lockwood locking systems ?
